University Orthopedics Center offers state-of-the-art MRI technology for our patients at two locations. We have an Open MRI located at 101 Regent Court in State College and a 1.5 Tesla MRI unit at our Windmere Centre Facility located at 476 Rolling Ridge Drive, State College. Many of our patients are able to have an MRI examination performed in the same office complex as their physican's appointment and sometimes, even the same day.
The basic technology of an open MRI is similar to that of a traditional MRI Exam. The major difference for the patient is that instead of laying in a narrow, tube-shaped structure, the patient lies on an imaging table with an open space around the body. Above the patient is a large, round mechanism from which electromagnetic waves are transmitted. Like the traditional MRI, an open MRI test is painless and does not use ionizing radiation. Pre-testing preparation is the same for both MRI tests. Physician recommendation is necessary for some open MRI procedures.
University Orthopedics Center MRI offers an experienced, caring staff that will go to great lengths to make your exam a positive experience. It is also part of our growing commitment in helping our patients by providing ease of access for quality care.
Upon arrival you will register with the receptionist. Please be prepared to provide current medical and insurance information.
Prior to entereing the MRI Suite, you will be required to remove all jewelry, keys, coins and credit cards. If your clothing has any metallic material such as a zipper, rivets, or belt buckle, you will be provided with an imaging gown for use during the exam. A secure dressing room is provided for all stored items.
Once dressed, you will then proceed to the scan room where the imaging procedure will be performed. A technologist, who operates the MRI equipment, will scan images in the areas your doctor has requested. The MRI technologist will interact with you to keep you informed and comfortable during the exam procedure in order to get the best results.
If you have a pacemaker, you should not be imaged. The pacemaker will be affected by scanners in the magnetic field. If you have any metal material within your body such as pins, ferromagnetic clips, etc., you more than likely will not be imaged. These objects could be twisted by the magnetic field which can cause serious injuries. Most new surgical metal implants are made of high quality stainless steel which is non-magnetic.
The exam typically lasts between 20 to 30 minutes on the 1.5 Tesla MRI and 45 minutes on the Open MRI equipment. You will need to lie still for periods of 2 to 10 minutes depending on which MRI equipment you are being scanned with. During this process you will hear knocking sounds which indicates when the MRI scanning is being turned on and off. You will be supplied with foam ear plugs to protect your ears and or provided headphones with music being supplied for your listening pleasure.
Once the exam is completed, a report will be forwarded to your doctor who will then contact you to discuss the results.
